The Lusaka City Council has issued a public notice directing all street vendors in Lusaka to stop trading in undesignated areas and return to their respective trading spaces in markets.
Town Clerk Oliver Muuka stated that the directive is in accordance with the Markets and Bus Stations Act No. 7 of 2007 and Statutory Instrument (SI) No. 12 of 2018, which empower local authorities to regulate trading, manage public markets and bus stations, and control street vending.
Vendors have been instructed to cease street trading effective September 29, 2026. The local authority warned that failure to comply will result in the loss of trading spaces, which will be reallocated to prospective traders.
