Zambia has this week welcomed the first mission of the Czech medical team to be deployed at Lewanika General Hospital in Mongu between May 1 and May 11, 2023 under the Czech government’s MEDEVAC Programme.

The Czech doctors and nurses, alongside their Zambian counterparts, will be providing free medical care to persons whose conditions prevent them from leading a dignified life.

Czechia will cover all costs for the medical services to be provided.

Additionally, the Czech doctors will donate large quantities of medical materials on conclusion of their mission at Lewanika General Hospital.

The main objective of the medical mission is to establish cooperation in the treatment of surgical and orthopaedic patients and to ensure a transfer of the Czech know-how in traumatology.

The doctors’ programme is a continuation of cooperation established during Zambia’s health minister Sylvia Masebo’s visit in Prague.

The Czech Republic currently focuses its development and humanitarian programmes in Zambia on Western and Southern provinces.

Caritas Czech Republic started cooperating with Lewanika General Hospital in Mongu in 2013 and that partnership has continued.

In the last 10 years, Czech cooperation funded different projects related with maternal and child health.
In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Czech government assisted Lewanika General Hospital to cope with the health crisis.

This is according to a statement issued by the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Zambia.
