THE Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) has removed a K1 coin that was stuck in the throat of a two-year-old girl of Mwansabombwe District, Luapula Province.

A team of surgeons at Ng’anda Bilonda Hospital in Mwansabombwe successfully removed the coin that was stuck in the minor’s throat for four days.

The incident happened last week on Thursday, after the toddler was handed a coin, which led to a quarrel with her elder brother, who equally wanted it.

In an attempt to conceal the money, she swallowed it.

The family initially attempted several home remedies, including giving the child bananas, to no avail.

The girl was taken to St. Paul’s Hospital, where she was admitted for three days.

Lead surgeon Tuzrussel Mwenya said the hospital received the child around 23:00 hours on Sunday.

Dr Mwenya said the medical team could not perform the procedure immediately because the child had been fed, a situation that could pose complications during the extraction.

“This procedure was delicate, given the child’s age and the duration the foreign object had been lodged in her throat, but we successfully removed the coin,” he said.

Dr Mwenya cautioned parents to avoid giving toddlers coins to avert similar incidents.
