A 25-year-old man has died after suffering severe injuries when a tree he was cutting collapsed on him in Dowa District, Malawi.
The deceased, identified as Awoleriyano Nasoni, was from Kasese Village under Senior Chief Chakhaza.
According to his brother, Patrick Samson, the accident happened on Monday at Kaufulu Primary School in Nkhuyu Village under Senior Chief Kayembe, where Nasoni had gone to cut firewood.
Samson said everything appeared normal until part of the tree suddenly gave way and came crashing down on him, leaving him seriously injured.
He was rushed to Madisi Hospital, where doctors discovered that he had sustained a fracture to his spine. Owing to the seriousness of his condition, he was referred the same day to Kamuzu Central Hospital for specialist treatment.
Family members had hoped he would recover after doctors scheduled him for surgery on Friday.
Sadly, Nasoni died on Thursday evening before the operation could be carried out.
His passing has left relatives and residents of his home village mourning the loss of a young man whose life was cut short in a tragic accident.
