A second-year student at Chipata Trades Training Institute has died after allegedly taking his own life by drinking a poisonous substance in Chipata District, Eastern Province.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, and was reported at Chipata Central Police Station at around 00:40 hours.

Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba identified the deceased as Daniel Kumwenda from Chama District, who was residing at the Chipata Trades Training Institute compound.

The deceased was pursuing a certificate in secretariat and was expected to complete this December.

Preliminary investigations indicate that a note allegedly left by the deceased stated that he had impregnated a fellow student, who reportedly wanted to terminate the pregnancy while he opposed the decision.

The Police Commanding Officer said the note further indicated that the situation had affected his concentration on his studies.

Mr. Mweemba said the student was found unconscious in his house by a lecturer who had been assigned to look for him after he could not be located.

He said two empty bottles believed to have contained poisonous substances were found beside him.

Mr. Mweemba said the student was initially rushed to the Chipata Trades Training Institute Clinic before being referred to Chipata Central Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

He added that police officers who inspected the body at the hospital found no visible physical injuries.

The body has since been deposited in the Chipata Central Hospital mortuary, awaiting burial.

The Police Commanding Officer said no foul play is suspected, and police investigations into the matter are continuing.
