Mr. Kawana was speaking in Lusaka today when he officiated at the inaugural ABSA Cup Journalist Awards, a landmark event aimed at recognising excellence in sports journalism and celebrating the media’s contribution to the growth of football in the country.

He praised journalists across the country for their dedication in covering the ABSA Cup and other football competitions, noting that their work continues to enhance the visibility and popularity of the sport.

Mr. Kawana said journalism plays a pivotal role in shaping the national narrative by capturing, interpreting and communicating key sporting moments that reflect Zambia’s achievements and reinforce national identity.

He stressed that professionalism remains the cornerstone of responsible journalism, adding that accuracy, fairness and credibility are essential in an era of rapid information dissemination.

The Permanent Secretary described the ABSA Cup as more than just a football tournament, saying it represents ambition, resilience and national pride, while also transforming lives through sport.

He further observed that the success of football is not only measured on the field of play, but also through the quality and integrity of media coverage that brings the game closer to millions of Zambians.

Mr. Kawana also acknowledged the role of journalists in transforming sporting events into a lasting national legacy through reporting, photography, commentary and digital storytelling that preserves Zambia’s sporting history.

He commended Absa Bank Zambia for introducing the journalist awards, saying the initiative highlights the importance of recognising excellence and professionalism within the media industry.

The Permanent Secretary also praised the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) and the Zambia Premier League for their continued collaboration with the media, noting that it has helped expand the reach and profile of the ABSA Cup.

Mr. Kawana encouraged journalists to continue producing stories that inspire, inform and unite the nation, saying in telling the story of the ABSA Cup, they are also documenting Zambia’s broader sporting journey.

He congratulated all nominees and winners at the 2026 ABSA Cup Journalist Awards, expressing Government’s appreciation for their commitment and professionalism in covering the tournament.

The awards brought together media practitioners, football administrators, and corporate stakeholders in celebration of excellence in sports journalism and the continued growth of Zambia’s sports and media sectors.
